This will elevate any domain permission issues when you are trying to create your Availability Group and listener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DNS entries:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>1. This should be completed by your system administrator or someone who knows what they are doing and has the correct domain privileges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Open DNS Manager. There should already be an entry for your windows cluster under your OU (organizational unit).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"255\" height=\"28\" src=\"https:\/\/virtual-dba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/dns_manager_cluster_OU.png\" alt=\"dns manager cluster OU\" class=\"wp-image-35957\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Add a static Host(A) entry for the listener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"248\" height=\"194\" src=\"https:\/\/virtual-dba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/static_HostA_listener_2.png\" alt=\"static Host(A) listener\" class=\"wp-image-35961\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Windows Failover Cluster Manager:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Windows Cluster name: <strong><em>Cluster1<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find the cluster name within Windows Cluster Failover Manager. In the example below, the cluster name is cluster1. The only nodes (servers) that are listed should be the servers you want to create as your primary and secondaries. Do not add other servers, since we do not want those servers affecting your cluster. The cluster should be created and running without errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"204\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/virtual-dba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/windows_cluster_failover_manager_3.png\" alt=\"windows cluster failover manager\" class=\"wp-image-35964\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Active Directory:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>SQL Server Instance name (listener) \u2013 NEW: <strong><em>DistListener<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can name your listener anything you want. Make it meaningful so you know that listener goes with that Availability Group (if you have more than one AG and more than one listener) or a set of servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Create the Active Directory Object and give permissions to the Windows Cluster name ahead of time. This should be done first so the creation of the Availability Group and listener goes smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. This should be completed by your system administrator or someone who knows what they are doing and has the correct domain privileges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Connect to a server that has &#8220;<strong>Active Directory Users and Computers<\/strong>&#8221; installed. Your domain controller will have it installed. Other servers can have it installed but you have to add that windows feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Open <strong>Control Panel<\/strong>, <strong>System and Security<\/strong>, <strong>Administrative Tools<\/strong>, then <strong>Active Directory Users and Computers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"361\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/virtual-dba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/control_panel_active_directory_4.png\" alt=\"control panel active directory\" class=\"wp-image-35954\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Locate the same AD OU that contains the servers and the windows cluster name (Cluster1). This will be located under <strong>Computers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"238\" height=\"99\" src=\"https:\/\/virtual-dba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/computers_cluster_AD_OU_5.png\" alt=\"computers cluster AD OU\" class=\"wp-image-35953\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"380\" height=\"27\" src=\"https:\/\/virtual-dba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/cluster1_computer_6.png\" alt=\"cluster1 computer\" class=\"wp-image-35952\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Create a new computer for the SQL Server listener name in this same OU: <strong><em>DistListener<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"377\" height=\"31\" src=\"https:\/\/virtual-dba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/distlistener_new_computer_7.png\" alt=\"distlistener new computer\" class=\"wp-image-35956\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>6. Open the new object: &nbsp;<em><strong>DistListener<\/strong><\/em>, go to the <strong>Security<\/strong> tab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7. If you do not see the <strong>Security<\/strong> tab, go to <strong>View<\/strong>, <strong>Advanced Features<\/strong>. This will now allow you to see the <strong>Security<\/strong> Tab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"457\" height=\"164\" src=\"https:\/\/virtual-dba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/advanced_features_security_tab_8.png\" alt=\"advanced features security tab\" class=\"wp-image-35951\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"203\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/virtual-dba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/view_advanced_features_9.png\" alt=\"view advanced features\" class=\"wp-image-35963\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>8. Choose<strong> ADD<\/strong> and enter the name of the Windows Cluster: <strong><em>Cluster1<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"542\" height=\"303\" src=\"https:\/\/virtual-dba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/add_window_cluster_name_10.png\" alt=\"add window cluster name\" class=\"wp-image-35950\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>9. While still there, click <strong>Object Types\u2026<\/strong> then <strong>Computers<\/strong>. Click <strong>OK<\/strong>. Click on windows cluster name: Cluster1$, click <strong>Check names<\/strong> then <strong>OK<\/strong>. Give this <strong>FULL CONTROL<\/strong> permissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"259\" height=\"213\" src=\"https:\/\/virtual-dba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/object_types_full_control_11.png\" alt=\"object types full control\" class=\"wp-image-35960\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"455\" height=\"81\" src=\"https:\/\/virtual-dba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/object_names_check_names_12.png\" alt=\"object names check names\" class=\"wp-image-35959\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"383\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/virtual-dba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/user_names_full_control_13.png\" alt=\"user names full control\" class=\"wp-image-35962\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>10. Choose <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>11. This gives the windows cluster object the permissions to bring the SQL Server Listener object online and control in the context of the cluster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>12. <strong>LAST: Very important:<\/strong> Locate the new object for <em><strong>DistListener<\/strong><\/em>, right click and choose <strong>DISABLE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"168\" height=\"86\" src=\"https:\/\/virtual-dba.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/distlistener_disable_account_14.png\" alt=\"distlistener disable account\" class=\"wp-image-35955\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>13.
