Oracle has moved all future releases to the multitenant architecture so conversion will eventually be necessary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These steps are written for <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.oracle.com\/database\/121\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oracle 12.1<\/a>; however, the basic premise and steps remain similar for later versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre><code>---------------------------\n--- ENVIRONMENT INFORMATION\nORACLE_HOME: \/u01\/app\/oracle\/product\/12.1.0.2\/\nNON-CDB DATABASE NAME: SANDBOX\nCDB DATABASE NAME: CDB1\nPDB DATABASE NAME: SANDBOX\n---------------------------<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Create database parameter file and create all referenced directory paths<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<pre><code>[oracle@bigdatalite ~] vi $ORACLE_HOME\/dbs\/initCDB1.ora\nDB_NAME = CDB1\nDB_BLOCK_SIZE = 8192\nDB_CREATE_FILE_DEST = \/u01\/app\/oracle\/oradata\nDB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST = \/u01\/app\/oracle\/fast_recovery_area\nCONTROL_FILES = ('\/u01\/app\/oracle\/oradata\/CDB1\/control01.ctl', '\/u01\/app\/oracle\/fast_recovery_area\/CDB1\/controlfile\/control2.ctl')\n<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Set environment and startup database off of the parameter file<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<pre><code>export ORACLE_HOME=\/u01\/app\/oracle\/product\/12.1.0.2\/dbhome_1\nexport ORACLE_SID=CDB1\nsqlplus \/ as sysdba\nSYS@CDB1&gt; startup nomount pfile='$ORACLE_HOME\/dbs\/initCDB1.ora';\n<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Create container database<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<pre><code>SYS@CDB1&gt;\nCREATE DATABASE CDB1\nUSER SYS IDENTIFIED BY &lt;PASSWORD&gt;\nUSER SYSTEM IDENTIFIED BY &lt;PASSWORD&gt;\nCHARACTER SET AL32UTF8 NATIONAL CHARACTER SET AL16UTF16\nEXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL\nDEFAULT TEMPORARY TABLESPACE TEMP01\nUNDO TABLESPACE UNDOTBS01\nENABLE PLUGGABLE DATABASE\n\/<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Run catcdb.sql script to create all components required by a CDB<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<pre><code>@?\/rdbms\/admin\/catcdb.sql<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Prepare the non-CDB environment for conversion.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step is to shutdown the non-CDB database, open in read-only mode, and create the XML file needed for CDB conversion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre><code>export ORACLE_SID=SANDBOX\nsqlplus \/ as sysdba\n--- check number of invalid objects and compile (if necessary)\nSYS@SANDBOX&gt; select * from dba_objects where status &lt;&gt; 'VALID';\n\nno rows selected\n\nSYS@SANDBOX&gt; shutdown immediate\nDatabase closed.\nDatabase dismounted.\nORACLE instance shut down.\n\nSYS@SANDBOX&gt; startup open read only;\nORACLE instance started.\n\nTotal System Global Area 1073741824 bytes\nFixed Size\t\t    2932632 bytes\nVariable Size\t\t  377487464 bytes\nDatabase Buffers\t  687865856 bytes\nRedo Buffers\t\t    5455872 bytes\nDatabase mounted.\nDatabase opened.\n\nSYS@SANDBOX&gt; show con_name;\n\nCON_NAME\n------------------------------\nSANDBOX\n\nSYS@SANDBOX&gt;\nBEGIN\nDBMS_PDB.DESCRIBE(pdb_descr_file =&gt; '\/tmp\/SANDBOXNonPDB.xml');\nEND;\n\/\n\nPL\/SQL procedure successfully completed.\n\nSYS@SANDBOX&gt; shutdown immediate\nDatabase closed.\nDatabase dismounted.\nORACLE instance shut down.\n<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. If the CHECK_PLUG_COMPATIBILITY returns &#8220;YES,&#8221; everything should be in order.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>However, review the PDB_PLUG_IN_VIOLATIONS view for errors\/warnings and correct as necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre><code>SYS@CDB1&gt;col cause for a20\ncol name for a20\ncol message for a35 word_wrapped\nselect name,cause,type,message,status from PDB_PLUG_IN_VIOLATIONS where name='SANDBOX'\n\/\n\nNAME\t\t     CAUSE\t\t  TYPE\n-------------------- -------------------- ---------\nMESSAGE \t\t\t    STATUS\n----------------------------------- ---------\nSANDBOX \t     Non-CDB to PDB\t  WARNING\nPDB plugged in is a non-CDB,\t    PENDING\nrequires noncdb_to_pdb.sql be run.\n<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Create a pluggable database using the XML file generated earlier.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If necessary, you can include the FILE_NAME_CONVERT parameter here to convert data file paths to a separate location. By default, the files will be copied to the location specified in the DB_CREATE_FILE_DEST parameter mentioned above. Additionally, I chose to use the default COPY parameter to retain the previous files to be deleted later. If you want to perform a direct conversion, include NOCOPY instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre><code>SYS@CDB1&gt; CREATE PLUGGABLE DATABASE SANDBOX USING '\/tmp\/SANDBOXNonPDB.xml';\n\nPluggable database created.\n<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9.
